1st Generation - Classic Deck Flooring

First-generation decking, also known as non-capped composite decking, is composed of wood powder, plastic, and additives. These materials are carefully blended to form a solid and dense core. However, since first-generation decking lacks a protective shield, the core is exposed to elements such as sun and stains. As a result, it is more susceptible to staining, fading, mold, and mildew.

Material Composition

Wood-Plastic Composite: The 1st generation composite decking is primarily made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic. The wood fibers can be from recycled or reclaimed wood, while the plastic is often recycled polyethylene or polypropylene.

Durability and Performance

Durability: 1st generation composite decking was more durable than wood in terms of resistance to rot, decay, and insect damage. However, it was still prone to issues like staining, scratching, and fading over time, especially when exposed to the elements.

Maintenance: Compared to wood, composite decking required less maintenance. There was no need for sanding, staining, or sealing, though regular cleaning was necessary to prevent mold and mildew growth.
